It has been a long time since I posted any education related things. Here I am, trying to give out some humble tips.
If you are a pharmacy student in Malaysia, you must be aware of forensic law test. I'll be giving some tips on how to pass it on your first try.
To those that don't have any idea about this, this test is very important for you to practice. Even if you study abroad but want to practice in Malaysia, you need to take this test. This test had NEGATIVE marking so you can't simply answer or tembak tembak. To pass you need 50/100. Each wrong, if not mistaken 0.25% will be deducted. I know it looks small but imagine if you got 49.75% You'll never know because the result shown PASS or FAIL.
You need to answer at least, the most least is 50 if you are SO FUCKING SURE those 50 are right! I would advice at least 70-80 questions that you are SURE of. If you want to hentam, tembak tembak, please la at least 10 questions, so if all wrong it will be 2.5% only.
Firstly, refer this website for more insight PERSONALLY from the government.
This link might change from time to time, if you cannot access this link, you can google: Qualifying Examination to Practice Pharmacy. Each year you have 3 chances to take the test. USUALLY in march, june and september. But in 2020, due to covid 19, JUNE's paper was cancelled so you could take it in september. MAYBE, it depends on your university.
In that website, you can download some documents.
I had done some past year papers (you need to get it from seniors or lecturers because it is illegal actually to have access to past year papers). If you get it, don't go around showing it off especially if you're famous or 'influencer'. Just keep it to yourself and your friends. You can also find some practice questions, well that is not illegal. OMG im so drifted from my main point here, OK i mean here, last year papers are quite different from 2020 edition. Especially if you do past year in 2005-2015 around that. I dont know the exact year they changed the arrangement of questions.
So basically, the questions in 201+ had been arranged according to the act sections. Means, the 100 questions are arranged according to the act. The advantage is, you dont have to be confuse which books or document you should search on.
If you had read the clarification in the link, here is some of the tips. Credit to my seniors who shared similar tips. They had been very helpful!
1. Buy the most updated law book. Which one? The dangerous act 1952 and Malaysian Laws on Poisons and Sale of Drugs. Especially the Poison book! I mean it. If you buy some old book from your senior or inherit it from seniors, make sure you know which sections that had been renew.
2. Tanda celah celah buku tu. If you ever saw any senior's book, you'll notice they put like a lot of sticky notes or like bookmark sticker around the book. Be strategic. Colour wise and arrangement wise.
Ok to make it simple, this is the example.
mostly the subtopic or the usual questions. This one u could arrange it better than mine, positions and colour wise.
I know mine looks like nightmare but as long as you know where to search for, then no problem.
If you want to dedicate an ample of time on this test, buy your senior's book and refer on how they do the tanda and you try to do your own. Use your creativity.
3. READ and DO QUESTIONS. Just like any other test, you need to study each and every sections. Do questions, whatever you can get your hands on. I know its a lot, lemme tell you how to make it simpler.
i. Read Poison book. I know its the thickest book among other documents but it has THE MOST questions on it. Try to understand and differentiate the things that sound almost the same. My book is 2017 edition which is actually outdated! Like, a lot had changed since 2017. I wrote whatever i knew that had changed. Especially the list of dangerous drugs and the amount of fees. Take notes of any changes if you dont want to get a new edition.
While doing the past year or practice questions, don't trust 100% of the answer. LOL i know but trust me. Even the answers could be confusing. If you had discussed with your friends and find a death end, refer directly to your lecturers.
ii. If you noticed, there are a few other documents. The latest documents that will be included since 2020 first exam is Code of Ethics and Guidance for COE. They had removed Code of Conduct. These thin documents, please lah read. This one is the small sections that could help. Let me make it easy for you,
- Malaysian Laws on Poisons &Sale of Drugs which consists of: (MOST IMPORTANT BOOK)
- Poisons Act 1952 & its Regulations - the longest and most complicated but need to read because about 30Q from it
- Sale of Drugs Act 1952 - SODA is okay, still manageable.
- Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984 - confusing but not much questions. If desperate, you could skip it
- Registration of Pharmacists Act 1951 & its Regulations - not so much but VERY IMPORTANT for your future.
- Medicines (Advertisement and Sale) Act 1956 & its Regulations - not much so read lah. easy to understand this part
- Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and its Regulations - not much questions on it, even some of my friends skip this. The usual questions you see in past year and practice helps. The last part of it very very seldom come out.
- Code of Ethics for Pharmacists 2018 - read, very easy
- Malaysian Nasional Medicines Policy (DUNas) - read also easy and the same Q in past year and practice
- Good Governance for Medicine (GGM) - quite complicated actually. I skipped this, only have like 5 questions
The questions will be arrange in this kind of sections. Like they will mention, questions 1 to 25 are under Poison Act 1952 and its Regulations
iii. Regulations. Okay if you had dig the Act but cannot find it, then korek the regulations. In the Poison book, each act has its regulations. Read both and understand both. The good thing about having senior's book, you can refer to their interpretations. Yes, you can put side notes in your book, like conteng on what you understand. If you ever write something on a piece of paper, you cannot bring that paper in the examinations.
So write in your damn books. Baru lah nampak macam belajar kann!
4. Start your paper. Okay usually the Dunas, COE all at the last parts. I know its not many questions but do that first. At least you know that those are easy to score. Do what you know first. Mana mana nak hentam nanti dulu. IF you wanted to skip questions, make sure you BOLD at the RIGHT question. This was my mistake, i rechecked too late, thank God nothing happened! I bold 51 while i answered 52, kinda situation at the last 10 minutes. I got panic but I cant do much about it. So, always check where you bold.
How i DID mine, i start from behind, i did Dunas, COE and some GGM whichever i knew lah. Then i start from the front. I skipped dangerous drug and cosmetics whichever im not sure. Then when the one im sure are done, i looked back and do whatever i could.
5. Manage your time. 3 hours sounds long but trust me, if you don't study, 3 hours are not enough. You must know where to search and what to search, that's why the tanda, bookmark is important. Try to answer the one you are sure of in 2 hours and the last hour answer whichever you feel like you could find and hentam where you feel yakin to hentam. Try to find time to recheck all your answers. Which ever you are not sure, please dont answer. Leave it blank. MAKE SURE IT IS BLANK. lol
6. Very cliche but, please study early. At least a month or one month and half early. Read slow slow and make sure to understand. Think like this, if you pass this test for the first time, after you graduated, you don't have to worry about applying PRP. I heard my lecturers said, some seniors delayed this test so he/she took more time to apply PRP. If you know lah, applying PRP is just the beginning. Waiting for a place is another chapter, at least 6 months to a year. Depending on which place is available. SO, if you passed this, at least you can apply ASAP.
Some people are lucky to pass it at the first time.
Some people worked their ass to pass it for the first time.
It's up to you to be which ever you want but if possible, pass it at the same year.
We need to take this test in 3rd year. Some uni take it in final year (4th). The advantage of 3rd year, you have at least 6 strikes while final year have 3 strikes (1 more strikes in 2020 due to covid).
It's not much actually but I hope it helps.
I'll try to link down some google drive i found and some documents that I know would be helpful. If you are desperate and need some documents from me, just reached me out in my twitter DM.
